Club members..
At our September club meeting we briefly talked about buying a new repeater
to replace our present repeater. The motion was made and passed. So it's
more or less a done deal. It's just a matter of when and with what. I agree
we need to get the repeater issue behind us. But thinking about it I have a
few things I think we need to talk about before we replace the repeater.
At the moment the repeater is working and has been for a long time. It
might be true the receive level could be better and a state of the art
replacement would probably work better. But our club treasury would be hard
pressed to cover our commitments to the clubs normal functions and also pay
for the new repeater. So I have a few suggestions I would like to talk about
at the November meeting.
- I would like the club to start a separate repeater fund. We can
take a considerable amount of money out of the treasury to start the fund
and still allow the club to function. We could have separate fund raisers
to further build the repeater fund.
- Before we buy the repeater I would like to 'fix' the grounding
issues we have at the repeater site. This would require minimal money from
the club but would take a bit of manpower. Historically, the biggest
problem we've had with the repeater is lightning. Proper grounding of the
repeater & antenna/coax would go a long way in protecting our investment.
- The Henderson Church of Christ is kind enough to allow us to meet
there every month at no charge. They also provide community protection in
their lower level during storms and times of emergency. Communications from
the lower level is very sporadic. I think, as a club we need to provide a
quality 2 meter antenna so there is reliable communications from that lower
level.
- At the same time we address the 2 meter antenna issue, I would
like to have some sort of HF antenna erected so we can have HF
communications for both meetings and emergency communications. I think both
antennas and associated equipment would be the clubs responsibility to erect
and maintain.
Our club is run by it's members, and these are just some of my thoughts.
Certainly lets toss some ideas around. This mailing list reaches more of our
membership then can normally make it to most meeting and so might be a good
forum to discuss our options.
If you want to respond to the list then reply to w4fhu at w4fhu.org otherwise
just a normal reply will only go to the originator.
Thank you for your time,
