Hello Hams:

Hope everyone is staying cool in this hot and humid weather. I hated to
miss visiting with many of you at the club’s Field Day activities this past
Saturday, but Uncle Sam called me to duty at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville.
I have to get as much of my Army time in during the summer months as I
can. I leave for Fort Devens just outside Boston, Mass for a couple of
weeks in July.

Anyway, it’s been a while since I sent out an update on the work that has
been going on with the repeater, so here it is:

1. The new repeater is now the only repeater in service at the site.
The old Motorola machine has been removed from the rack.

2. The new repeater (Vertex Standard) is now mounted in the rack under
the existing Controller and the entire system is neat and has new coax
cables connecting the repeater, bandpass filter and duplexers.

3. A new run of 9913 coax has been ordered and will replace the smaller
coax that goes from the cans to the base of the tower where it connects to
the Andrews hardline going up the tower to the antenna. This will reduce
the loss in that section of feedline and should be in place by next week.

4. The repeater is connected to our battery backup system at the site
and will give us continuous operation for several hours should the power go
out at the site.

5. This is a 50 watt continuous duty cycle repeater, which is about
10-15 watts hotter than the old Motorola was running.

6. We have already benefitted from improved performance on both the
transmit and receive sides of the new repeater. The greatest improvements
have been with HT operation in the area.

7. In the coming weeks we will be working to improve the grounding of
the repeater and all the other equipment located in the building.

I want to thank Joe Loucka (AG4QC) for all of his time and talent on helping
get the repeater connected to our existing Controller by designing and
building multiple interface cables and circuit cards. His assistance and
patience with this repeater upgrade has been invaluable.

Please use and enjoy the repeater and often as you can. It is there for our
daily use and enjoyment, but most important, it is there when we need it
during emergencies too!

73,

Ron Means
